Practical tips
Make the finished edge smaller than the tent floor. If the groundsheet sticks out, rain can run onto the sheet and travel under the tent instead of draining into the soil.
Cut after marking the finished outline and hem line. For shaped floors, draw the tent floor first, mark the inset line second, then add the hem allowance outside that finished footprint.

A groundsheet is a piece of fabric that sits underneath a tent. The groundsheet should be smaller than the tent’s floor area to prevent water from entering the tent. When it rain, water flows from the tent flysheet down the tent walls and lands on the ground.

For this reason, you must tuck the groundsheet into the tent walls so that the water flow away from the tent. If a groundsheet is too large relative to the tent floor area, the water will fall onto the groundsheet and flow into the tent. How to use the groundsheet calculator

Thus, the person will not have to calculate this value when he or she is at the fabric store. A groundsheet project is successful if the person makes the correct decision regarding the inset, the hem allowance, and the seam overlap.

These three values will impact the way that the tent drains water, how flat the groundsheet will lie when set on the ground, and the weight of the groundsheet.
