Size from the floor, then subtract tuck. A common custom-cut target is tent length minus two tucks and tent width minus two tucks. Add back only where the manufacturer expects a clip, buckle, or pole-end connection.
Keep plastic from peeking out in rain. Any exposed sheet can catch water from the fly and route it underneath the tent. If your sheet is too large, fold the edges under, never up against the tent wall.
Shape factor matters on tapered tents. A rectangular tarp can have a "good" area ratio while still sticking out at corners. Check the length and width margins, not only the final percentage.
Rocky sites need protection in the right places. A slightly smaller but well-centered footprint protects the sleeping floor better than a huge sheet that becomes a water collector around the perimeter.
