Recreational Vehicle (RV) vs. Skoolie

There is no doubt that every person’s needs are different when it comes to traveling. Especially if you are traveling for long distances on the road for many hours or days. There are multiple options to choose from depending on what you like. You can even adapt some of them and customize them to your unique style. Today we will talk about RVs and skoolies and some of their differences as well as some advantages.

A skoolie is a school bus completely adapted to become a house on wheels. Everything is changed to the point that it doesn’t look like a bus anymore, except the outside. Kitchens, beds, bathroom and lounge areas are added, most of them have a really nice minimalistic clean style perfect for getaways in a roomy area.

We previously mentioned an aspect that sometimes is not deemed as important for many, but can surely affect people’s decisions on choosing one or the other.

While an RV can have different options regarding sizes, and what’s inside, there is usually not much you can modify from the manufacturer, while with a skoolie it’s 100% your own personal customization and your decision on what to add and where to place it, you have endless options. You choose the colors, decoration, etc. This is a great option for creative people who want to express their personality through the skoolie, while on the other hand there are people who don’t want to bother with it, thus they prefer a regular RV without having to worry about it and simply start using it as soon as they purchase it.

Another important factor is maneuvering the RV. Motorhomes are way easier to manage than a long school bus, so it also depends on your skills and the type of place where you are driving.

RVs are also usually built with more standard parts than school buses so fixing something could be easier and cheaper. Although the general cost is not always cheaper. Buying an old school bus can be cheaper and it’s open for upgrades if you get bored of the same look after some years.

Another important factor is safety, RVs are not usually super safe and are just laminated, some of them don’t even have proper airbags in case of an accident, while a school bus is very durable since it was meant to protect children and is made of really strong materials.

There is no doubt that a skoolie can be a great option if you want something unique that will last for many years and can be constantly changed, but only if you are committed to work on it and have the time and invest according to your budget.
