Use floor area, not just rated capacity. A four-person tent can mean four narrow pads with almost no gear space. For adult groups, treat printed capacity as a maximum before gear.
Separate wet gear from sleep gear. Boots, rain shells, tarps, and packs should be assigned to vestibules, a shelter, a vehicle, or bear-safe storage before the sleeping layout is considered full.
Round up when using cots. Cots create fixed rectangles, block door swing, and cannot nest like pads. A tent that sleeps six on pads may feel like a three- or four-person cot tent.
