Dry storage matters: Put starters, matches, and a small tinder reserve in separate waterproof bags. One soaked bag should not end the whole fire plan.
Make the fuel smaller: If the result looks high, split wood to dry centers and prepare pencil-size kindling. That often lowers starter need faster than adding more cubes.
Count relights honestly: A fire that dies during dinner prep is a new ignition event unless you still have a useful coal bed.

How to Use the Calculator

The reality of your pack depends off your existing gear. The calculator deducts any starters you may already possess from a prior trip. It also won’t leave you short; it rounds up to full pack. It gets you to honestally tally up your number of relights. It’s easy to forget about all the times you had to reignite after a child poked the fire, or it rained on you during lunch, etc., etc. Tally them up beforehand. Otherwise, when you’re sitting there with a wet pile of wood, you’ll be down to your last few dependible starters.
Think of this estimate as a baseline. Modify accordingly to your own preps. Maybe you prep early and carry extra dry bags of fire-starters; maybe you arrive at camp carrying a single lighter and damp kindling. Even an optimistic number can seem inadequate. Prepare for the actual journey (not the idealized one). You should of prepared better.
