Time check: If the penalty is above 2.5x, compare the result with a longer trail detour. A longer clean trail can still arrive earlier and with more daylight margin.
Route check: Dense cover is rarely uniform. Break the leg into open, brush, and obstacle segments, calculate each one, then add the times for a better route plan.
