Matchlight Charcoal is just average Kingsford blocks with already mixed lighter fluid inside them. This way you do not need to buy a separate bottle of lighter fluid. Simply strike a match and light the pile up.
After around 10 minutes they are already ready to cook which helps to start grilling quickly and without trouble.
Matchlight Charcoal: Easy to Light but Has Some Problems
The main big advantage sits in the simple process of everything. You light the blocks, wait until they heat up and right away can start the grilling. The directions on the bag say to wait around 20 minutes until the charcoal looks fully gray.
If you need to add more charcoal during the cook, use only normal Kingsford not the Matchlight Charcoal type.
Some think that Matchlight Charcoal is wasteful, because the soaked lighter fluid makes the blocks burn more quickly than usual. Others consider it simply a marketing trick, where the companies charge more money for something that is just average blocks mixed with lighter fluid. Really it does not differ much form pouring lighter fluid yourself on regular Kingsford blocks.
A common complaint deals with the fact that foods grilled over Matchlight Charcoal often have a taste of lighter fluid. One guy accidentally burned the charcoal 10 minutes more than usually in a chimney starter, and in the end the result did not taste bad at all. Another time the outcome failed: some nice steak at a fishing trip was grilled over Matchlight Charcoal, but the lighter fluid smell stuck and ruined them.
Using only one block at a time does not really help. The trick works well only with a full pile of Matchlight Charcoal. The best way is to stack the blocks in a pyramid, light it in two spots near the base and simply let it burn.
Matchlight Charcoal is meant to remove entirely the need for a chimney starter. Simply stack them and let them burn for around 20 minutes. It works well for small grills like Smokey Joe or even as a base for wood in an outdoor fire pit.
Still one does not suggest it for smokers, but only for average grills.
Also storage is a common issue. Some worry about keeping Matchlight Charcoal in warm places like in a garage or truck bed, wondering if the heat could light the blocks because of the carried lighter fluid. But after the coals burn well for some minutes, the starter fluid fully burns off.
So the main problem issafe storage of the bag before use, not during the grilling itself.
Matchlight Charcoal comes in various bag sizes, for instance an 11.6-pound bag or a 12-pound double option. Because of that it can be a handy aid for those that hardly ever start a campfire or grill.
