⚠ Important: Do NOT rub affected skin — rubbing spreads capsaicinoids deeper into pores and significantly extends duration. Use blotting motions only when applying any rinse solution. Keep eyes open and blink rapidly to flush tear ducts naturally.
💧 Decontamination Tip: Water alone moves OC temporarily but does not neutralize it. Capsaicin is oil-soluble. Use soap, dish soap, or milk (casein protein binds capsaicin) for the fastest relief. Avoid hot water — it opens pores and worsens absorption.

Bear spray is a special spray, created to stop an attacking or charging bear on its way. The main ingredient is capsaicin, that strong irritant from hot peppers, together with similar chemicals. It works well because it targets the most sensitive parts of a bear: its great sense of smell and its sight.

Its thick hair? Not a lot of help. The spray splits in a broad cone-shaped burst which is meant to hit a big creature.

Bear Spray: What It Is and How to Use It

The experiences prove it; bear sprays stop the bear in around 90% of cases. The useful distance is about 15 metres, sometimes extending to 25 metres depending on the circumstances. Every shot should last between three and five seconds but right now you play that much long, as far as needed until the bear pulls back.

Everyone that walks through bear areas during camping, fishing, climbing or hunting, should have at least one canister. About that do not argue.

Counter Assault is the only brand that reaches a 40-foot spray distance. It carries 2% of capsaicin in a 10.2-ounce tin, sold for bears, mountain lions and coyotes too. Guard Alaska offers 20-foot reach with a full safety lid.

Also there is UDAP, that weighs around 7.9 ounces with a pistol handle, and folks praise it because of its force, covered distance and ease of use with that cone-shaped burst.

Here is where it becomes interesting: bear spray and pepper spray are relatives, but the first is the stronger and less knew relative. It has more oleoresin capsicum than typical self-defense pepper spray. Even so that higher focus does not always give better results everywhere, because effects are more gradual.

Bear spray reaches 3.2 millions of Scoville heat units. Compare that to habanero pepper at about 300 000, and you understand the difference. Besides that strong spiciness, bear spray shoots up to 30 or 40 feet, while usual pepper spray limits to around 10 feet.

One important detail relates to the status: bear spray expires. The pepper stays strong, but the gas that casts it, fails. New canisters reach effectively 10 feet.

After two years the same tin can only do 6 feet. Check those dates.

The method is just as important as the product itself. Do not aim directly at the bear, rather form a cloud of spray between you and the creature. If it still is quite far away, start creating the cloud while you slowly back up and make loud sound.

The wind changes everything, so stay close. Sometimes you need more than one canister. That also requires that the bear spray be easily reached, not hidden in your backpack, where you cannot quickly pull it out.

Some products come with practice canisters, so that you can test the real beam of the spray before a real encounter.

Black bears scare easy… Only a small spray usually pushes them to flee, if they come too close. Grizzlies are an entirely different case, because they can attackfiercely, especially cub-protecting females.
