Per liter rule: Fresh water is close enough to 1 kg per liter for hiking decisions, so every full liter adds about 2.2 lb before container weight.
Dry stretch rule: Compare water needed before the next reliable refill against water available after reserve and buffer. That is the margin that matters.
Container rule: Heavy bottles can add several ounces before the water goes in. The calculator separates liquid weight from bottle, bladder, hose, and wet filter weight.
