A rain jacket is one of those things that seems easy but can become surprisingly difficult when buying. These jackets usually are simpler, commonly cheaper than coats or ponchos, and they are meant for light to medium rain. Normally they have two or two and half-layer protection and can be lightweight on the body.
The main cause for concern is the breathing. A cheap rubber rain jacket fully blocks the rain, but the wearer will sweat inside and in the end become wet anyhow. Breathable materials already are the standard, and they work very well.
How to Choose a Rain Jacket
Layered fabrics carry little holes, that allows water steam, like sweat, pass through them, but block bigger rain drops. Gore-Tex is the first kind of this, done from stretched PTFE, commonly mixed with polypropylene.
When choosing layers, a 2.5L or 3L rain jacket is the best choice. A 2L rain jacket only has material and coating, which is not perfect. A 2.5L version includes the outer fabric, coatnig and printed or applied protection, that preserves the coating.
Even breathable rain jackets can in the end fail in quite a lot of wet conditions. Average nylon or Gore-Tex rain jacket soaks after a day of strong rain. During a long period of heavy reign during several days, getting wet is almost impossible to escape.
Some packable rain jackets last until 20,000 mm water resistance, but they lack heat, wind resistance or toughness and most work for light to medium rain.
The Patagonia Torrentshell is a famous pick. It well protects against water and is very breathable and strong. The Marmot Precip forms another reliable option, just like the Outdoor Research Apollo and the Black Diamond Stormline.
When budget does not matter, Arc’teryx commonly is the best, with the Beta SL as the top choice, if price does not matter. More premium Patagonia, Marmot and Helly Hansen follow closely. Spending at least 300 dollars usually gives a rain jacket quite a lot good for hours outside in rain, whilestaying dry.
Frogg Toggs produce a very light hooded rain jacket for around 15 dollars. It lacks outer pockets and can puff outside, but the paper like material well breathes. If it rips during a journey, duct tape can fix it, or simply replace it, because it is that cheap.
One tip, that commonly gets overlooked, is wash the rain jacket and redo the DWR coating. Also, keeping a premium rain jacket away from campfires is wise, because one flying spark can burn a hole directly through the material. Open zips help for airflow, which reduces the annoying moisture inside during activities like hiking upward.
