bear spray is made up of special spray that aims to repel angry bears. The main ingredients carry capsaicin and similar capsaicinoids, that act as strong irritating materials. It works by means of attack against the bear by means of very strong smell and visual feeling, because those senses are much more sensitive than physical attack of the bear.
For full use of its power, the spray spreads in a cone-shaped cloud.
How to Use Bear Spray Safely
The goal is not to spray it directly at the bear. Instead, one must create a cloud between themselves and the bear. When the bear finds himself around 50 yards away, one already should prepare that cloud, while one backs away slowly and makes noisy sound.
It is important to watch the direction of the wind always. A few times maybe one needs to use more than one dose.
bear spray reaches record success in 90 percent for repelling bears. It proves itself useful until 15 yards outside, and sometimes even until 25 yards. Each spray burst must last at least three to five seconds.
The spray can reach speed of 70 miles per hour, which quite quickly can injure the cornea at near distance. Bear spray stores a more focused amount of active ingredients than usual pepper spray, together with bigger reach, around 30 to 40 feet rather than about 10 feet for normal pepper spray. The estimated number of Scoville units in bear spray is 3.2 million, compared too around 300 000 in habanero pepper.
Counter Assault sells bear spray that reaches 40 feet, that they call maximum strength. Guard Alaska Bear Spray has 20-foot reach and comes with safety cover. UDAP offers 7.9-ounce bear sprays with pistol-shaped tin for around 53 dollars, and two-packs for about 90 dollars.
Frontiersman produces 9.2-ounce sprays designed for bears and mountain lion attacks. Bear spray must beregistered by EPA.
One thing to recall is the shelf life. The pepper substances keep their force during time, but the propellant loses its power. New spray reaches around 10 feet, while two-year-old spray only reaches about 6 feet.
That makes a big difference when one faces a bear.
Some bear spray products include a practice inert canister. It really helps to get a feeling about the size of the spray cloud before a real encounter. Keeping bear spray in gear is almost useless, because it will not be available quickly enough during an attack.
One must keep it somewhere easily reached. Black bears especially easily get scared. A little burst of spray at a curious black bear can make it flee.
Wild mother bears that defend children happen mostly with grizzlies, not with black bears.
