Butane canisters are common fuel sources for portable kitchens and lighters. They weigh little, are easy to carry and cost little so they work well for cooking outside or living in a tent. The most used types come in a size of 8 units, but some companies offer amounts a bit different, for instance 5,6 units or 8,8 units.
Many well known companies make such canisters. Among them GasOne, Coleman, Mainstream Kuira Master, Iwatani, Sterno and Bernzomatic are simply some examples. One finds them in stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s and online at Amazon.
How to Use and Store Butane Canisters Safely
Some are sold in big packs, for instance 12-packs of GasOne. Mind special offers, where one piece drops to almost one dollar, as well. Getting several during discounts helps to save money on a long-term basis.
Safety features differ according to producer. Canisters of Sterno arrive with double protective mechanism, that stores a heat sensing valve and a device for turning the edge. The heat sensing valve automatically closes the flow of flame, when the kitchen too warms or is used wrong.
Canisters of GasOne have also a safe shutoff feature. Some kitchens advise to use canisters with a valve for release in counter-sink, hence check what your device requires.
Storage deserves too mind carefully. One should keep butane canisters in a cold, dry place, so that pressure does not build inside. Temperatures higher than what the label points, usually around 120 degrees Fahrenheit, matter to avoid.
Laying them in a car without airflow during a warm day risks a lot. Regular care at home works for protecting them against moisture and heat. Reducing the amount stored together also lowers dangers.
Having around four of them at hand is fine, but forty is already another cause.
One canister is enough for a whole day of camping without problems. For everyday cooking at home using a portable kitchen, preparing foods like veggie patties and sausages almost every evening, one piece lasts around a week. The real length depends on the butane canister size, the heat output of the burner and the efficiency of the device.
Butane does not work well during cool weather. It stops turning to gas under almost 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Hence some companies sell a mix of butane and propane.
Even so putting propane in a butane canister is dangerous. Butane canisters have thinner metal, because butane has only around a quarter of the gas pressure of propane. Too high pressure could cause serious accidents.
The usually scentless butane gas in canisters mixes with chemicals, that give it a smell ofrotten egg, so that leaks are easily noticed.
