Why Is My Freshwater Tank Filling When Connected To City Water?
- Defective Valve
The water valve with the pump is one of the leading reasons why you’re running into this problem. If you notice that the water is spilling out of your freshwater tank even though you have the water line connected to the city water then something may be stuck in the valve. If the valve is stuck then the water from the city water tank will overflow into the freshwater tank.
So, to fix this problem you should first remove the supply line for the city water from your RV. Then you can go ahead and turn on your water pump and wait for a few minutes. After waiting for a few minutes, you should turn on the hot water in your motorhome and let it run for a few minutes. That should free up your water valve and fix the filling issue for you.
At this stage, you can just drain out the fresh water tank and then attach the city water supply to the RV. Now, you will just have to wait and see if the issue is fixed or not. It can take a while for the tanks to fill up and you can also check the water level from the main control panel inside your RV.
- High Water Pressure

This is the reason why so many people use pressure regulators to control the water.
So, if you keep running into this problem then you might need to install a water regulator to maintain optimal water pressure. A good regulator should not cost you more than 60 bucks. After installation, it will make sure that you don’t have to worry about freshwater tanks filling up with the city water.
Some other devices like a shutoff valve can also make it easier to manage the waterline connected to your RV. The shutoff valve will cut off the water flow when the tank is close to filling up. That way you won’t have to worry about any water spilling into the fresh water tank through the water pump. You can buy any regulating device depending upon your budget.
- Defective Water Pump
If the fresh water tank is still filling up with the city water, then it is likely that the water pump is defective. You will need to either call a repairman to take a look at your pump or replace it yourself. If you’re sure that the water pump is defective then it would be better just to replace it yourself and that way you can save some bucks.
However, if you are not sure then just call a repairman and he will take a look at your water pump. It is always best to seek help from professionals if you can’t isolate the problem yourself.
